Editing

Now then...

Editing...

Time consuming you bet...

Yesterday i sat infront of my computer at 9am. By 7pm i was just finishing up doing the main rough pass of each intrument. There are a few niggly bits timing wise here and there but i am genrally happy with the result. In a minute i am goin got listen back again with fresh ears to hear the sound.

Worked out that 12 songs on the album...2 are nearly edited...1 is just vocals and pad...so 9 full songs left to do...work on a solid day and half for each one (yesterdays i classed as an easy song) there is a lot still to be doing. Its all fun! :-S

Status Update...A lot Can Happen in Nearly 2 Weeks

Well...

Since the last post...

Bongos recorded...cymbal hits recroded...backing vocals started...electric overdubed...much editing...little sleeping!

Last Saturday the drummer came to record some cymbal overdubs we needed...and at the same tiem the opportunity was embarked upon to record bongos for a breakdown of one of the tracks. The bogos need some FX in mixing but otherwise sound quite cool...they certainly add alot to the track.

Yesterday 50% to ne of the backing singers was recorded and a bit less to one of the others. Seems a lot but the quality is good so yey! This was however an extremely long day and by the end matchsticks were required to keep the eyes open!

Today electric parts were overdubed. this, to say the least, took a heck of a lot longer than anticipated...however it was worth it and the new parts gained are a vast improvement.

Whilst backing up the days work diarys were also synced across the a few memebers of the band to sort out mixing and alos to give a final timescale across post production...Scary stuff when you are talking weeks rather than months!

In the midst of these last coupleof weeks vast amounts of editing have also been carried out and by the end of most days it feels like the ears are truly at capacity for the day...Bringing this back to today i can certainly say i now know alot more about the sounds to an electric guitar than at the start...and because of the FX box the guitarists users can distinguish between various guitar amps alot easier...really dont know if that is a good or bad thing for a sound engineer to say!

Acoustic Guitar(s)

Today the second acoustic guitar was recorded. Each guitar plays one of each style of playing. Plucking and stumming. It was the plucking that was recorded today.

11 songs, 2 clean takes of each, just under 8 hours. It was a long day but the quality gained was good. There is some editing to do, but that shouldnt be too much of a problem.

From an opportunism point of view there were also some overdubs to be done on the "strumming" acoustic so these were done this evening. Lengthens the day for me, but saves time in setting up the mic's for the guitar again.

The next recording session is this Friday. The aim of this is to finish the lead vocals off.

Lots of editing to be done before that however.

How Things Can Change...

This weekedn we recorded some more vocals. It is hard to say what the difference is, but for some reason they seemed to go so much better than the previous weekend!

Based on this we have decided to re-record some sections from last weekend.

Both me and the lead signer are also more confident than we where with what we were getting.

We have also sheduled another session this friday to re do some of the songs we were not happy with.

Yesterday i burned a disk of the entire album as it stands. Run time is just under 54 minutes. I went sat down stairs and listened it through a different set of speakers. it is amazing how many mroe things get noticed wen listening to in bulk, rather than just listening to i whilst editing a section.

The second acoustic guitar is being recorded tomorrow.

Due to a long day i now need to make a decision on whether to edit tonight or nite. Choices!

Vocal Editing

In recording the vocals there was one song to which I was skeptical of if we had a take. Slightly nervous of this, I sat down yesterday and started editing this vocal. There was a take - just, there are a few lines a may want to look at again!

Something that soon became clear; you cannot edit too much vocals in one go! It was quite hard to listen to at the end, but hopefully it is OK. I will listen again later.

This edit has been forwarded to the singer to gain there opinion. From here we will work on another song.

Tomorrow we are doing a early session to record some more vocals, and then again on Saturday.
2nd Acoustic guitar goes down on Tuesday, its all go!

7 weeks to go!
